Network Shortcut Distributor – Using drive letters assigned to network shares on a network is an easy and convenient way to give your users access to resources on a network. It's also easy and convenient for network admins, as they can assign drive letters to resources by an AD Group Policy. There are two big problems with this approach however: 1. You can only assign up to 26 shares (the number of available letters in the alphabet). 2. Assigning drive letters can interfere with other removable devices that auto-assign them- selves fixed drive letters (like USB devices), rendering them useless if there is a drive letter conflict. For these reasons, the preferred method of sharing resources out to users – despite being tedious to implement and maintain, is to use the more modern Network Location Shortcuts instead. Why tedious? For network admins, while there is now a AD Group Policy that supports Network Location Shortcuts, its quite complex to use and has some serious limitations (see this TechNet post)! The Network Shortcut Distributor was developed to overcome the difficulty of distributing and maintaining Network Location Shortcuts across a network. Just like regular Network Location Shortcuts created manually, the shortcuts created and managed in this app, will appear in user's Windows Explorer Folders pane, and in any other apps that use Windows Directory Services (Word, Excel, etc.). The app can be run with or without an interface - just use the command line switch /autoexec to run it in batch mode (e.g. used with Windows Task Manager to run at a predetermined time) INSTRUCTIONS: Simply download and run the Installer and find the app folder shortcut in your start menu. An Uninstaller is also included for your convenience. DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk! Run as Domain or Enterprise Admin. (Written in .NET - Requires .NET 4.x which it will install for you if required - Windows 7 to 10, Server 2008 to 2016)
PC Law Export – Many of our clients use PC Law - an MS SQL Server based Accounting and Case-Management software package for the legal and para-legal professions. We wrote this app based on a recent request by users to allow the extraction of data for export directly from their PC Law SQL server tables. The app is highly configurable, stores log-in credentials in encrypted format, and it can actually be used on any SQL Server data - not just PC Law (it's just pre-configued for PC Law)! The app can be run with or without an interface (so it can be called by Windows Task Manager to run at a predetermined time), and is about 65% faster than PC Law is in exporting data from within it's limited UI export functions! INSTRUCTIONS: Simply download and run the Installer and find the app folder shortcut in your start menu. An Uninstaller is also included for your convenience. DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk! Some SQL knowledge is helpful but not required. When first started the app presents a log-in/config/instructions screen. (Written in .NET - Requires .NET 4.x which it will install for you if required - Windows only)
Server Reboot – A short time ago, a client asked us to allow an Office Manager who is only an AD Domain User to reboot domain servers or PCs remotely (from their desktop). Normally, only Domain Admins can do this, so we needed to provide a simple interface for the user that effectively impersonates a Domain Admin account without disclosing the Domain Admin's credentials. This app, stores the password of the AD Domain Admin in an encrypted format, verifies that the account exists and that it has Domain (or Enterprise) Admin rights, limits the list of rebootable devices (user configurable - e.g. leave out the DC as that could cause chaos if rebooted!), reports the progress of the rebooting process and notifies the user when the server is back on-line. Although there are many free apps on the Web that allow you to reboot remote domain servers and PCs, we couldn't find any that were sufficently "DeGeekified" for a non technical user. INSTRUCTIONS: Simply download and run the Installer and find the app folder shortcut in your start menu. An Uninstaller is also included for your convenience. DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk! "With great power, comes great reponsibility"! When first started the app presents a log-in/config/instructions screen. FOREX – A simple little app that takes some user input, and based on XML data from the Bank of Canada Web site, grabs the daily Foreign Exchange rates and calculates the $CAD value and stores it in the Windows Clipboard. Handy when you need to tell how much that Amazon.com purchase will really cost you! INSTRUCTIONS: Simply download and run the Installer and find the app folder shortcut in your start menu. An Uninstaller is also included for your convenience. DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk! Relies on third party data which we can't control! Although there is a config file to set/change the BOC web site should that change. (Written in .NET - Requires .NET 4.x which it will install for you if required - Windows only)
EMDR – An application written by us many years ago to aid the spouse of one of our staff to recover from the psychological effects of a severe car accident. The procedure uses a technology called EMDR (look it up here) that involves playing an audio tape in a special sound room that simply plays a tone or sound at varying rates on separate channels. While the tape plays, the patient has to envision their accident and somehow this cures their anxiety. I know - sounds spooky but apparently it works! And it worked for our staff member's spouse too after we built an app that does the same thing! So if you find yourself wanting to beat some anxiety some time, give this app a try! INSTRUCTIONS: Simply download and run the Installer and find the app folder shortcut in your start menu. An Uninstaller is also included for your convenience. DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk!
